Translucent Silly Putty: Recipe

Here is a recipe for some really fun clear silly putty! I saw this at Play at Home Mom a while back and have been wanting to try it ever since! I JUST found a store with clear glue and I am so excited we finally got to do this!

Here is what you need:

STA-FLO liquid starch
Clear school glue
Mixing bowl
Food coloring (optional)

Empty one (5 oz.) bottle of clear school glue into a mixing bowl.

The ratio for glue to starch isn't quite 2:1 so you will end up using almost 3 oz. of liquid starch.
Add just a little bit at a time. Mixing it in with your fingers will work best.

If you can trust your little ones not to eat this, let them help mix it out. It is incredibly gooey and snotty, lol.

Keep mixing in the liquid starch and once you have poured in almost 3 oz. then really get in there and start kneading it. It will take a few minutes for the putty to get to the right consistency, so just keep going until it feels right. It shouldn't be stringy or too sticky. If it doesn't feel right after a few minutes add a little more starch (to make it less stringy) or glue (to make it less sticky).
The silly putty without coloring.
We made one batch without coloring and one with. Of course, she chose green!

If you want to do one with coloring, just add a couple drops into the bowl after you put the glue in and then proceed as normal.

ewwww lol

Our finished "silly putty" Honestly, it looks more like slime, but thicker. TONS of fun though!!

Enjoy!

  1. Hi, I wonder would it dry or harden?

  2. Hi! Thanks for the great question! We kept this in a tupperware container for a while for repeat play, but after a while it got pretty dirty so we tossed it. It may have eventually dried out, but we didn't have it long enough to find out :)
